Thirukkural is an amazing piece
of literature written by Thiruvalluvar, 2000 years ago.
It is amazing because of the universality of its
contents. It is applicable for the entire human race,
irrespective of caste, religion, nationality or race. Thirukkural is written in the form of couplets called Kural, with each couplet having two lines; four words in the first line and three in the second. Ten such couplets are grouped in a chapter called Adhikaaram. In all there are 133 such chapters. The entire book divided into three major divisions, namely, ARAM (virtue), PORUL (wealth) and INBAM (love). There are thirty eight chapters in Aram, the first four called payiram or prefactory matter, the next twenty about illaram (the householders dharma), the next thirteen about thuravaram (the path of renunciation) and one on Oozhiyal (what follows us from our previous incarnation). The second division Porul contains seventy chapters, the first twenty five deals with the duties of kings, the succeeding thirty two chapters with the other matters concerning the state, and next thirteen, with certain sundry concerns. The third division Inbam contains twenty five chapters, the first seven being on pre marital love (kalavu) and the next eighteen on marital love. Since thirukural is wriiten over 2000 years ago, the language is not easy to understand for ordinary folks like me. We need the guidance of literary experts like Parimelazhagar, Kalaignar, or Sujatha who have given the meaning of each kural in a language we can understand. For Kalaignar Karunanidhi's vurai visit the DMK site. Here is a partial list my favorite kurals: |
